💰 Pay to stay at places overnight to sleep and work well. Obviously, there are exceptions like dispersed camping in national parks and friend’s driveways. But when traveling through suburbia I find it best to use paid apps like Harvest Hosts, Boondockers Welcome, and Hipcamp.
🐢 Don’t rush to upgrade your van. I felt rushed to fix all the inefficiencies in the van right away. I thought these upgrades were needed in order for me to feel comfortable. Not true. I’m quite comfortable writing this to you now.
🧽 Clean dishes and food tools in the evening. Cleaning everything at once uses less water, takes less time, and is more enjoyable. I was cleaning everything as I used it at first and it took time away from when I could be working, walking, writing, enjoying the sun.
🧹 Clean before entering the van, and deep clean on Sundays. I haven’t wiped down surfaces, cleaned the windows, beat any blankets, or vacuumed any crevices and everything looks clean. Again, this saves time for other things.
🗄️ Everything will find its place. I’m tempted to over-organize but I know everything will find its right place in good time.
👫 Ask to travel together. If you meet someone you vibe with, ask if they want to travel together for a day or so. I have missed this opportunity and don’t want to miss it again.
♨️ You don’t need hot water. The propane tank I need to activate the system that heats the water is not very accessible, plus the hot water system takes up a lot of space. I haven’t used the system since leaving and will remove it when I have the right tools and time.
📡 Working remotely without proper internet equipment sucks. I thought this could be one of those things I just figure out along the way but it’s definitely not one of those things. It has become one of those things out of necessity. If you plan on van travel and work remotely, install the WeBoost OTR before leaving.
🚿 Staying clean is simple without a van shower. I’m so glad I did not get a full shower installed in the van. Having a Planet Fitness membership for days I feel like doing a heavy workout and getting a warm shower has been good enough. On other days, I fill the bottom part of the sink with water, squirt some peppermint Dr. Bronner's soap in there, and use a rag to wipe down my body. Then I rinse my hair. That’s it. I’ve only taken two showers this week and I smell fine.
🌅 Morning routines are so important. Writing this to you now is part of my routine. Before this, I went for a long walk with Chester. After this, I will exercise and meditate. Walk. Write. Exercise. Meditate. This routine helps me live, work, and travel well. Without it, things start to fall apart.
🚰 Remember to reattach the drainpipe to your gray tank after emptying it, or you'll find a pool of dishwater, coffee grounds, and toothpaste spit under the sink. Whoops.
