I'm currently planning a 5-month trip to South America and I'm struggling a bit with the route. We've already established that we will be travelling from November through March..
We would want to include Argentina (including Patagonia), small parts of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. We were planning on starting in Argentina and going straight down and back up towards the Northern part of South America afterwards. My hesitations are these:.
-
Patagonia is best in November, December and January might be busy.
-
The original route would mean that we would visit Peru in January, which is rainy season and would mean difficulty doing most treks. Also, we were planning on travelling by motorcycle in Peru, which would be a very difficult thing to do in rainy season. A solution would be to start in Peru in November, going down afterwards and travelling back to Colombia after Patagonia.

This would mean that we visit Northern Argentina in mid-December, which would mean very high temperatures. Also, Patagonia might be very busy in December-January which would mean difficulties in finding accommodation. A solution would be to bring a tent but we were initially planning on bringing a tent only to Patagonia and sending it home afterwards, since we don't really need it elsewhere.

Also, I prefer not to fly within South America. I understand this might be unavoidable.
Basically, I know that I have to make choices since there is no optimal route, which depends on how much the above assumptions are true and how much I value them. What I'm looking for is experiences with these assumptions, whether you think the weather should influence planning so much, or if we should just wing it? I.e., is the rainy season in Peru indeed a problem? Is Patagonia in the summer without a tent a bed idea?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
