Border control Italy took away my biometric residence card is this legal? ( Uk resident Indian passport settled status )

Some background info Indian passport, Lived in Italy from 1997-2014 ( father had Italian passport & carta di soggiorno). I had Indian passport with permesso di soggiorno , aswel as carta d’identita.

For years I was waiting for my Italian passport but they was extremely slow so I never got it. I then moved to Uk 2014 to now. Currently still have Indian passport with Uk permanent residency settled status.

Have always travelled to Italy and Uk with both my Uk residence card and the Italian residence card. However the latest trip to Sicily the border control took away my Italian residence card and stated I could only have one residence card ( Uk or Italian ) , they would not have let me enter if I didn’t let them take this card. So they took this away from me. As many of you know Italian border control are very serious and you cannot argue with them.

I have done some research and I’m quite sure this was not legal of them to take this card away. Since I lived in Italy for around 10 years and before 2021 (residency rights under the withdrawal agreement ).

Any advice much appreciated of what steps I can take next to getting back this “carta di soggiorno” , or also even better making a complaint to the Sicilian airport ( if they had no right to do this ). Unfortunately I did not get the man’s name at the time.
