Safe(ish) countries that are very different to UK?

Hi,

I want to get out of my comfort zone a bit to travel somewhere with a different culture/feel to the UK or northern Europe but that is still relatively safe.

I like the idea of Columbia, Tanzania or Indonesia for example but I am a wuss when it comes to travel and I (possibly mistakenly) believe that these countries wouldn't necessarily be that safe for tourists.

Any unique places to travel with relative low levels of violent crime? (I've been to Japan which was great).
