Egypt travel - do we need pre-booked guided tours or can find guides at sites?

Hey, traveling to Egypt this December. I was wondering if I would be able to find a guide at the sites (e.g. Giza Plateau or Valley of the Kings). I prefer to explore and plan my own day but would love a guide to talk through some of the sites. Would you suggest this or would it be better to take full-day pre-booked tours? If so, why?
