Your Vital Info.

I live in Thailand. A friend came to visit a few weeks ago. He was out for a walk and got run down by a car. Now, he's in an ICU.

My life and his family's lives would be a whole lot simpler right now if he had done a simple thing: made a hard copy of his passport, and then on the back of the page had put contact details of family back home and insurance company and policy number. Also, if on his insurance policy he had checked and initialized the waiver allowing family members to make medical decisions and accept compensation for him. In the USA, this is called H.I.P.P.A.

If you are traveling or living in a foreign country, please do this simple thing. make several copies. One that stays in your backpack or bag. One you keep at your accommodation.

Keeping it in a wallet or fanny pack doesn't cut it. They are often stolen at an accident scene as happened in my friends case. We didn't know he'd been injured until I called him to chat and an EW nurse picked up the call. They didn't know his name or anything about him.

On your phone or in your email files doesn't cut it either. Not if only you can access it.

Please, for the sake of your family and friends who will have to deal with a mountain of shit if anything happens to you, DO THIS SIMPLE THING!!!.

My friend did not expect his life to change when he went out that day. You don't ever really know how your day will end either. Do it now.
