How do you commit to actually making international flight and hotel reservations for a vacation?

We always get travel insurance to hopefully cover things out of our control. But to get on the web and start resolving the dates, making the reservations - I start to panic. We usually compare flights and hotels dates, making the flight reservations first.

What helps you take that final step?
