You might have caught me flying and visiting almost anywhere in the world 10-15 years ago, but as I’ve gotten a little older I’ve realized that I don’t feel comfortable visiting countries that gravely oppress and limit the freedom of its citizens, though I am very aware that will leave few places left to visit, and many economies are dependent on tourism - especially where government systems and social structures can’t effectively support their populations. I’ve just been to Hong Kong and whilst it’s a fabulous vibrant city, I thought a lot about the pro-democracy protests while I was there, and didn’t love the idea that my money spent in HK was in some way supporting police brutality and the oppressions of Hong Kongers. Anyone else think about this stuff? And how do you think it through?
