I’ve been to Thailand, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Mexico, and the only place where “off-the-beaten-path” restaurants didn’t try to dissuade me from spicy is Mexico, and it’s probably cause I speak Spanish.
I’m from Louisiana and me and my whole family grew up eating spicy. The crawfish we boil is spicier than Thailand’s “10/10” spicy at most restaurants I eat at.
I feel like most places are not giving me their true spicy food, but maybe the stereotypes about the country having spicy food is just misleading?
I understand the restaurants 100%, people can eat food that isn’t spicy enough, but even my heat-lovin ass can’t finish something past my limit, so the bet to make tourists that often don’t truly like spicy food is to make it mild, but I’m just wondering how many people have similar experiences?
Like do I need to learn how to say “I truly like it spicy, please make it spicy” in the language of whatever country I’m visiting?
