Is it ever financially worth it to fly into one city and home from a different city?

I’m brainstorming travel plans for 2024 and this is a genuine question I am curious about. Some of the itineraries that I’m thinking of would make a lot of sense to fly into one city and then home from another city. But when I look at ticket prices it seems to be consistently double the cost, or basically the same cost to buy a round trip ticket vs. a one way. I’d expect a one way to cost more, but not to cost the same amount as a round trip. So I was wondering how many people prefer to travel this way? And do you think it is worth it to save the time lost traveling back to the starting city to fly back from there (I know that’s affected personal finances, but still curious)?

Also, any recommended airlines for traveling from the east coast of the US to Europe (likely Austria, Germany, maybe Budapest)
