Does anyone else get surprised to see their country/city here as a destination for others, as well as the recommended things to do while there?

I've been thinking a bit about the concept of 'being a local', and how everyone is one of the elusive, authentic locals to the city that they are from. I'm from a pretty nondescript town in England, and I always find it surprising when on here and other travel forums I see people planning trips to England beyond a few days in London or York at a push. I find it really interesting to see the other cities or areas people choose to visit here, because to me none of them are really destinations to go out of your way to see.

To someone who lives here, England can often seem boring, grey, cold, expensive and unexciting. I think the day to day drudgery of living somewhere can make a place seem a lot less appealing and exciting compared to it being a foreign, different place for someone who chooses to visit it as a travel destination, and all the things that tourists would do in a place are very different to what you do when you live somewhere. I don't really visit the museums or the galleries, I've seen a lot of the sights on school trips or just through generally living here, and while I know that its a country full of history and scenic nature, that kinda gets lost in the day to day of living here.

I'm sure that all the places I choose to travel to and see as exciting destinations, the people from there will feel exactly the same as I do about where I'm from. Does anyone else get this looking at this sub? What are some of the places or things you've been most surprised to see as someone's travel destination/on someone's itinerary? Has it made you want to be more of a tourist in your own city/country?
