Forgot to re-check bags in Miami and they’re not on the plane- what next?

Currently sitting on the plane and decided to look at my airtags for luggage and it’s not on the plane. I flew from Curaçao to Miami and am waiting to fly from Miami to NY. When we went through customs in Miami, I just assumed my bags would be checked through to NY. What should I do? The flight attendant said to file a claim.

EDIT: is there anything else we can do besides file a claim?
