How did travel work decades ago before cell phones and Google Maps? Could some of you explain your stories?

I heard there was a time where airports did not check IDs? Where cell phones and Google Maps did not exist.

I started solo travelling just in 2017, pretty dang "modern". Would love to hear some stories about travel from decades ago, how you navigated things.
