Tipping Experiences in Travel? Agree/Disagree that Gratuity should never be asked for on pre-payment?

I was reading an article about tipping in the travel industry and they wrote "Blame it on the rise of point-of-sale technology" -- ie., ubiquitous tip screens on every card swipe. In travel (ie, tours), a lot of the gratuity is built into the price, but is that fair if you haven't experienced the service yet?

I recently returned back from a white water rafting trip and as part of booking they "For your convenience, gratuity can be added to your total in advance." Gratuity should never be asked for in front IMO. Agree / Disagree?
