What are some things you have missed out while traveling due to lack of research / access to the "right" information?

I find that sometimes I will overlook something in a trip like an alternate route or just an event / tour I would have liked to attend that I happened to be near by but didn't know about until it was too late (fully booked or the dates already passed).

What are examples of such things that you could have taken advantage of (with maybe almost no modification to your plans) but missed due to not knowing about them?

I'll give an example. I missed a food festival in Rio because I didn't know it was happening while there and a large outdoor concert 5 mins from where I was staying by 1 day. Not the end of the world but a bit unfortunate.

I'm sure I will always miss something due to bad research but hopefully can reduce those to as few as possible.

It seems I need to start incorporating research that involves "happening during x dates" but may only be locally known (not totally sure if there is a good central place for "smaller" events that are not known world wide like oktoberfest , carnival, etc). Perhaps sub-reddits are the answer. Most of these types of events I have found about through speaking with people who live in x city and/or subreddits for those cities.
