Why was I allowed to go in Italy without a Visa when I needed one?

So this is a little confusing, I'm from Tunisia and I need a visa to go into Italy or any schengen country.

However, when I was traveling to the US I had a long layover in rome 24 hours +, and instead of going to the transit area I messed up and when through border control, there he looked at my passport stamped it and after walking for 2 minutes I found myself outside the airport.

This has left me very confusing, they didn't ask me any questions, they didn't ask for an address, visa, nothing he just scanned my passport on his computer, stamped it, and returned it to me.

Anybody has an idea about what this was about ? Because I don't have US or any other citizenship as far as I know, and I am 100% sure that I need a visa to go in Italy.
