Have you ever got sick in the hours before you were suppose to fly home from overseas?

I was traveling in Europe and looking forward to my flight home after a great vacation. 24 hours before I was suppose to fly home I suddenly got very sick. 103 fever, chills, weakness, coughing, etc. I went to a local doctor and he said I had COVID. I got a letter from the doctor stating I had COVID, plus all the things connected to it listed above.

I was foolish and had not bought any travel insurance, or used a better credit card to book my flight. I had no insurance of any type. I also had flown on basic economy which did not allow for any flight changes or refunds.

I contacted the airline and asked for my reservation to be changed to leave in about a week. Hopefully I would be better by then. They rejected my request out of hand. They did not care I had COVID. Nor did she care I had a doctors note. The Airline Representative said if I did not fly home the next day my return ticket would be worthless.

I spent the next week in bed at the least expensive hotel I could find and was forced to buy a last minute one way ticket home. The hotels and airfare cost me about $2500.

Would travel insurance have really helped me or would they find some small print to deny my claim?

Got sick overseas, tell us your story!
