We got scammed multiple times now on our few days on Phuket. It really destroys our holiday experience on this island.
At smaller villages around Kamala you pay a lot of money for everything. Locals just tell you higher prices when you look foreign.
At Patong Beach we were charged 4500 THB after we ordered food for like 3000 THB at a seafood restaurant. The owners weren’t even Thais.
At Phuket City on our way to Big Buddha we were on the roads with 2 motorbikes. Police pulled us out and charged us 2x 2000 THB for not carrying a international drivers license. One fine was paid on the other side of the road at police station. The other fine should be paid at the other officer in cash. He said don’t show the money and pointed to his helmet cam. He took the money hiding it under a receipt, which I didn’t even receive afterwards. The receipt received at the police station is fully written in Thai and got the wrong fine and the wrong license plate on it. It said 1000 THB. They said, we can drive with this for 3 days. Of course they lied. So we had to stop using our motorbikes in order to avoid another fine at the next corner. You can’t trust police on this island. This makes you feel so unsafe.
This island is full of scam. And the amount they pull out our pockets are so insane, that they really hurt our whole trip budget. We were in Bangkok the week before and everything there was so nice. Local people don’t rely on tourist scams there.
I will now have to tell everybody about our horrible experience with Phuket. This is so sad.
