Travelling with a criminal record

I was convicted of burglary when I was 17. I was an idiot, young and with the wrong group of friends at the time. Although I was 17 when charged with the offence. Due to the sheriff constantly deferring the courts date for nearly a year, I got my sentence when I was over 18. I wasn’t given anything hefty, just a few hours unpaid work. I am now in my 30s, have a degree revolves around working with very vulnerable members of society, I currently work in this field as well. (Just explaining for context if it would be relevant for helping my chances?)

I was wondering what people’s experiences are travelling with a criminal record? Specifically the states and Japan? Or if I’d get away with stating I was a minor at the time?
