I should really get luggage trackers — Sleepy Pilot accidentally took my suitcase

This morning I was on a hotel shuttle to the Orlando Airport and ours was the last stop. We got off and realized that my suitcase was missing. My parents distinctly remember putting it in the back of the shuttle. After a couple panicked calls to the other passengers by our driver (bless his heart), we didn’t get any positive responses. Finally, we were informed by the airport help desk that a pilot (he was also on the shuttle) had taken my suitcase along with his and left it at the lost and found. The manager of the hotel was told that I need to call the lost and found to authorize that the hotel can send it back to me. Of course MCO happens to have one of those privatly managed lost and founds. The number that the manager and I could find only leads to an automated message that made me fill out a claim and had me pay $40 bucks (I could have gone with a standard claim for free, but they left me an email saying they needed me to fill out a priority claim cause if my unique situation). I’m going to file a claim on my suitcase with Amex and luckily I have status at the hotel chain, so that should hopefully help the situation, but it’s still a bit annoying. The shuttle was early in the morning and I’m assuming the pilot was just fog-brained when he took my suitcase, but I’m not sure if you want a pilot that’s sleep deprived like that.
