Currently trying to book a flight from the US to Europe. Youngest child will turn 2 during the trip. I cannot book the flight online as the booking site flags the child as being an infant. That's fair I guess.
Before I go on, at this point let me be clear and state I WANT to buy the infant a seat for the departing flight & then obviously I have to buy a seat on the way back.
So I call the airline and they said there is absolutely no way I can book the flights with 4 seats each way (2 adults, 2 kids). I have to book the child as an infant and then and I quote "bring a carseat to the airport and go to the counter and ask them if I can get a seat and then pay for it" AND do that on the way back. Now if you have traveled with kids any sort of disorganization is always going to end in tears. Imagine for instance bring the seat which I wouldn't if there is no seat and the flight being full. Also not being seated with the rest of the family is a high possibility with this approach. Anyway rant over.
Can somebody please for my sanity tell me there is a way around this if I can get talking to the right person at the airline. The person I spoke to (who tried their best but the options they presented weren't great) was categoric in telling me it was a "systematic" issue and there is absolutely no way around it.
...and then tell me how to proceed
Quick edit to add the agent I spoke would not escalate, refused, said there was no point.
