Heathrow to Gatwick - 5 hours to connect. Train/bus options and customs times?

Hoping someone on here has had to do this before (recently) and can share their experience.

We’re flying on British Airways DEN - LHR arriving at 9:25am and then the connecting flight leaves at 2:25pm from LGW to AGP.

British Airways seems to think that 5 hours is enough time to go through customs at LHR (with US passports) and get to LGW, go through security and get to the gate before the plane leaves for Malaga. I’ve read other threads on here where people were concerned having 3.5 hours to do this same airport exchange. And, all I can find is other threads that are a few years old saying that buses were the best option, and when I looked at the buses, looks like it’s about £20/person and takes 70 minutes.

Part of me prefers trains because at least they don’t have to deal with the traffic, but it’s looking like it would be 3 different train lines to get there, which scared us a bit just because of timing.

Has anyone taken the bus option? Has anyone taken the trains? And, what do you all think of the 5 hours? The last time we were at LHR, customs there took about 2 hours to get through but that was in 2018 and they were having issues.
