I see so many people saying how travel broadened their horizons, how they learned from the locals and so on. How does that work when a tourist would have at most a very rudimentary grasp of their host country language, which surely doesn't lend itself to in-depth exchanges of thoughts and opinions with the locals? At the same time, seeing just a bit of how the locals live based on staying even a few weeks in one place surely gives only the tiniest insight into what their actual day to day, private, inner lives are like? Just having a hard time connecting such claims with the practical hurdles of language, time and space.
