Traveling to a “Do Not Travel” part of Mexico, any advice is welcome

My boyfriend’s family is from Michoacán and I’ll be traveling with him to a wedding this Christmas. I’m doing my research and found that Michoacán is on the “Do Not Travel” list of states due to crime and kidnapping. I will never be alone on this trip but I know I should take my safety seriously. Should I be too worried about it? I’m flying, so I’m not 100% certain I’d be able to travel with blades, pepper spray, tasers, etc. I have a little bit of a background in self defense but I’m small-framed and not very intimidating. Not to mention I’ll probably be the only white person in the area, so I’ll definitely stand out. I’m trying not to be too anxious about it, but if any one has any advice that will keep me out of trouble, that would be highly appreciated 🫶

Edit: aside from a cruise to the Bahamas, this is my first time traveling to another country.
