Your hospitalisation during a holiday abroad - did you have to pay upfront?

Seeing a number of people on this branch caught out because they didn’t have travel insurance inspired this post.

To me this to me is insane. Even when I lived in Europe and traveled there with a passport from one of the counties with ‘best’ passport did I not go without insurance. Because you can end up paying as much as the locals do which can add up and repatriation was never covered.

When my partner ended up hospitalised in the US for day surgery - we never paid a penny. They just took the details at ER and the insurance company took care of the rest.

Did you have to fork out yourself before leaving hospital / country and claim back in the insurance? People in those other posts claimed it’s common. If so, which countries?
