Carry on bag had to be checked in and my jewelry was stolen. What can I do?

Hey everyone!

So basically I packed all my jewelry in a small ziploc in my carry on bag, but when I went to go check in at the WestJet desk at the punta cana airport, they told me I had to check in my bag due to the flight being full.

Unfortunately I did not remember to take out my jewelry at that exact instant, and when I flew back to Toronto Pearson airport and opened my bag at home, I realized the ziploc was missing.

I know my jewelry isn’t coming back, but what steps can I take to at least get some money back for this? I don’t have receipts for the jewelry as they are all family heirlooms.
