Does informing the airlines that you are hearing impaired actually do anything?

My husband has a hearing impairment and uses hearing aids. However, all of the background noise on the plane renders his hearing aids useless no matter what setting he sets them to. He just takes them out, and can barely hear.

He can't possibly be the only one in this situation.

Does it make any difference to flag yourself as hearing impaired to the airlines?
