If you had the choice to go to either the Mexican Caribbean or Hawaii for two weeks in mid-January, which would you pick?

I’m torn between these two destinations for an upcoming two week trip in January. I’ve made reservations for both (which I can cancel with no penalty), but I find myself going back and forth. For me, I like that Hawaii would be safer than places like Tulum or Playa Del Carmen as I’ve heard that those areas can still be sketchy for tourists. On the other hand, I feel like I would enjoy the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean more just for relaxed swimming; I know the water in Hawaii can get rough on the north shores of the islands and isn’t the most ideal for amateurs. Has anyone been to both and can give me some pointers/advice? For some context, I’ll be flying out of SoCal.
