Street food to die for

One of my favorite activities when traveling is munching on the local delicacies available from the side of the street. Sure, finer dining has its place, but street food is where the most enjoyable flavors are. Please share some recommendations from the foods you’ve tried and start salivating just thinking about.

A few of mine…

  • Beijing: It should be sacrilegious to not try 煎饼 (jianbing) at least once. Pan-fried right in front of us, hot and crunchy when we get it with just the right amount of paste and preserved vegetables… 😋

  • Nanjing: The 辣油小馄饨 (small wontons with hot oil) and 鸭血粉丝汤 (duck blood and vermicelli soup) will warm anyone up on a cold day. Another recommendation is 油端子, a pan-fried white radish pastry.

  • Brussels: Given that Belgium is the home of the French fry, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Brussels has the best fries I’ve tasted so far. Also, there’s a reason Belgian waffles are well-known; get a freshly made waffle topped with ice cream and fresh fruit…🤤

  • Athens: I didn’t know I hadn’t lived until I tried gyros in Athens.

  • Mexico City: Probably the taco capital of the world. My favorite by far is the taco and torta de maciza (fully lean white meat pork). For some reason, I’ve only found it in Mexico City. Another option is getting a quesadilla without cheese; supposedly, Mexico City is the only place that doesn’t find this odd (I could be wrong though).

A few bucket-list destinations for street food: Marrakech, Cairo, Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore, Cape Town. I’d love to add more to the list.
