Travelling to other countries when you only speak English

I have a heap of frequent flyer miles that I want to take advantage of next year. I have been to Las Vegas a couple of times now, but this time I am looking at somewhere else. The four main countries I am looking at are Japan, Vietnam, Germany, and France.

My biggest fear, is the fact that I can only speak English, and that I will be travelling alone. I am not planning on going on holiday as part of a tour group either, although I am looking at a couple of tours in some of the countries.

Which of these countries would be the safest to travel to as an English only speaker, and travelling alone? What are other people's experiences in travelling alone to a foreign country, and not being able to speak the local language?
