People hating on Americans for only knowing english when traveling

Recently came across multiple videos/posts where people were talking about americans being monolingual.

For example I saw a video of a man interviewing a few french girls who were triggered by the fact that Americans travel to France and speak English. The man hit them with the question, "Well, when you go to Italy, what do you speak? Do you know Italian??" The girls were like "Uh...no...we speak English."

By their logic, they are allowed to travel to Italy, Germany, Spain or wherever outside of France and speak...wait for it...English! But for Americans to travel, they have to learn French, Italian, German, Spanish...

Of course, I think studying another language is a great thing and everyone should give it a try, but...English is so widely spoken and the U.S. is so big, many americans just don't have exposure to anything other than English.

If you live in a foreign country for an extended time, it's a fair expectation to learn at least some of the language. I learned a pretty decent amount of Korean while living in Korea...but that's because I lived there and saw/heard it all the time. But for an American to spend a week visting france or whatever, they shouldn't be expected to spend years learning french lol. That's my piece. Just had to vent it 🤷‍♀️
