Hi all,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to be posting this, but I'm looking for some help / insight on what next steps to take or how to appropriately file legal complaints against an airline that lost my bag and is offering me a much lower sum than the baggage was worth.
For backdrop, I am a US citizen who took an international flight on Turkish Airlines. According to the airline, my luggage was taken off the conveyor belt in Istanbul by another person as I was still passing through customs. In my luggage was over $5000 of clothing and items--- I had just moved out of my previous housing so had literally all of my belongings with me in the luggage. I paid extra for the overweight, which I think may be part of why I was targeted (just a warning).
Anyways, after 1.5 months of "investigation," Turkish airlines today decided to offer me $400 of compensation for the >$5000 loss, despite acknowledging my items list. At least a few of the individual items lost were by themselves worth more than this amount. The airline did not at any point ask for receipts for any of the items, though I would be able to pull them for at least a quarter of the items. So, what do I do next? I don't want to $400, and understand that I am entitled to "up to 1131 Special Drawing Rights" (~$1800), but I have no idea on the best way to try and enforce this. I originally booked the flight with United, who outsourced it to Turkish, would there be anything they can do?
Does anyone have experience or advice on how to manage this situation? Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide!
