I'm planning to go to Japan late next year for my first big international trip and am thinking about getting a travel-focused credit card to help cover some of the cost with rewards points. I don't have any rewards credit card at the moment. I do have one Chase Slate card and a high credit score at the moment. My hope is that the rewards from the card would help cover the air fare and some of the hotels.
But it seems like a lot of travel credit cards are only maybe worth it if you do a lot of travel. Is it better to get a simpler cash-back card and just save the money I make from that for the trip? I know travel cards have travel perks that are nice, and multipliers for travel-oriented spending; but I don't think I'd be able to take a lot of advantage of those without drastically increasing my travel.
Right now I'm eyeing the Chase Sapphire Preferred, for reference, though I would be open to suggestions on others to look at.
