I've always struggled a bit with how this is suppose to work for a foreigner. There are many examples of cities I've heard foreigners use the local pronunciation or spelling for, even once they return home to their country. Notable examples include Roma, Napoli, Barthelona, Ibitha.
It's odd because this seems to only happen with certain places - no one comes back from Mexico City saying Ciudad Mex(h)ico, but how else are you supposed to pronounce Oaxaca besides the local way?
Why do we mostly choose to pronounce Versailles and Marseille in french (there's a town in Kentucky who uses English pronunciation though..) but not many people come home saying they visit Pari(s) with the French pronunciation.
People don't travel to Suomi, they go to Finland. No one goes to Deutschland, they go to Germany. But some people still decide to say say Cologne or Munich with a German accent
I guess I struggle with when to use the local pronunciation and when to use the English one, as a native speaker. My thoughts so far are to use the English pronunciation all the time unless I'm forming a sentence completely in the local language, which isn't very often. What do you think?
