Delayed because of weather... or not... got a refund

So, couple of weeks back my wife and I got delayed because there was discrepancy in the passenger manifest. We finally pulled away from the gate, and sat on our taxiway for bit. Then, we were told we had to go back to the gate for more fuel because we were now being rerouted around a storm. As soon as I heard this I knew we were going to miss our connection.

We eventually landed in our connecting city... 15 minutes after our connection had taken off. Went to the desk to get on another flight. Only thing available was the next day, about 24 hours later. Took what we could get, but no money for a hotel because the delay was "due to weather". Nothing the lady at the counter coul do, and no point getting md to her. She even changed my seats on the other flights so that I had more legroom.

So, long story short, we had to pay for a hotel room for the night, meals, and transferring flights on a regional airline in our destination country. All out of pocket. About $500 in total.

Fast forward week later we come home. I sent an email to American Airlines presenting my case that had we not been delayed by the manifest mix-up, we would have departed on time and not been rerouted around the storm. I expected nothing, so I was shocked when we got a response stating American would be sending us funds to cover the extra expenses.

So, be nice to the folks at the counters. They're doing what they can. And always send an email to see if you can get somewhere that way. Worst that can happen is that you get nowhere further than you already were. And you may just get an outcome in your favor.
